Itch remedies other than cortisone

Of course what you use for your itch depends on the reason for the itch. I wouldn't put oatmeal on a bug bite... wouldn't help.

Speaking of bug bites... I grew up in Florida and lived in Georgia for about 10 years. I have PLENTY of experience with biting bugs!

I have found that the number one way to get rid of the itch for fire ant bites, chiggers, skeeters, red bugs, green flies, blue flies, horse flies, yellow jackets, and/or noseeums is... wait for it... ammonia.

Have you seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding? The father runs around squirting Windex on everything. It funny, but based in an old wives tale about ammonia.

If you buy the ammonia based window cleaner, then you're set. It is very easy to just spray down your ankles or legs when attacked by the annoying and painful 6 leggers. If you don't, then buy a 49 cent bottle of ammonia and use a cotton swab or the equivalent and dab onto the bite.

Do not put this on an open wound that you have scratched bloody... one, it will burn like the fires of hell and two, it is ammonia, after all. Use on closed skin and not around the eyes, mouth, nose, or in nether regions. Please use your common sense.

You will be utterly amazed how quickly the pain and itch dissappears. My father didn't believe me, that is until he stepped into a fire ant mound and came running in covered in bites. Less than 30 seconds after spraying down his legs with Windex... he was back to normal. He is now a believer.

Good luck, y'all!!
